The Greenbriar Ghost: The Unquiet Grave and the Facts Behind the Legend

Wednesday, September 13, 2017 - 2:30pm - 3:30pm

Blowing Rock Art & History Museum NC

Greenbrier County, West Virginia – 1897. A man is convicted of murdering his wife based on the testimony of her ghost. New York Times bestselling author Sharyn McCrumb thoroughly researched this true story, heretofore told as a folktale. Using a century of documents, including birth certificates, death certificates, census records, and newspaper articles, she pieced together a chronicle of events. Told from the point of view of the young African American attorney who second-chaired the defense, The Unquiet Grave brings to life the family, the lawyers, and the townspeople caught up in the tragedy.

Books will be available for purchase and to have signed. The event is free with paid admission to the museum.

Sharyn McCrumb is an award-winning Southern writer, best known for her Appalachian Ballad novels set in the North Carolina/Tennessee mountains, including the New York Times Best Sellers The Ballad of Tom Dooley, She Walks These Hills, and The Rosewood Casket. In September 2017, Simon & Schuster will publish her latest novel, The Unquiet Grave, a well-researched history of West Virginia’s Greenbrier Ghost.

McCrumb has been a guest author at the National Festival of the Book in Washington, DC, and her novels have won numerous awards, including a DAR Award from the Edward Buncombe Chapter (NC); the Patricia Winn Award for Southern Fiction from the Montgomery County Arts & Heritage Council of Clarksville, TN; the Wilma Dykeman Award for Literature given by the East Tennessee Historical Society; the AWA Outstanding Contribution to Appalachian Literature Award; and the Chaffin Award for Southern Literature. She was named Best Mountain Writer 2013 by Blue Ridge Country Magazine.

Free with museum admission.
