Date/Time

Thursday, March 8, 2018 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Location

Blowing Rock Art and History Museum
159 Chestnut St
Blowing Rock, NC 28605

Description

The film follows a community theater troupe called Higher Ground and the making of their first production. The play shows community members as they struggle with a flood of water and flood of drugs. Visiting artists helped community members gather stories and write songs for this original production.

The Higher Ground Theater project uses oral histories to create a narrative about a specific issue or issues in Harlan County. Music and visual art compliment the narrative told by a group of 40 to 80 actors of all ages, from different regions of the county, and from all walks of life. The Higher Ground group has been fortunate to work with a variety of artists including professional directors, writers, choreographers, set designers, lighting designers, and stage managers.

After the film discussion will be facilitated by Willard Watson. Willard has a Master of Arts in Appalachian Studies with a focus on Sustainability from Appalachian State University. He has studied the Higher Ground theater troupe extensively and attended multiple performances and events organized by the group.

The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum is a community supported 501-c3 non-profit organization. Donations from patrons help keep the museum operating. There is a suggested donation for this event of $5 students with ID, seniors, active military, EBT cardholders, $7 general admission.
