  • Poetry/Voice of Diversity

    We are living in a world which may be on the edge. Affirming that diversity is essential to our survival, and in the spirit of Allen Ginsberg who urged us not to ignore but to embrace the diversity of life, The High Country Poets bring us an evening of poetry with the theme “Poetry is the Voice of Diversity.”

    will be read by: Joseph Bathanti, Maryrose Carroll, Mary Gray, Earl LeClaire, Mar Startari, and Mary Tuckers. The poems
    read will represent the perspectives of an African-American person, a LGBT person, a Vietnam Veteran, and a horse.

  • Trauma & Recovery: Adverse Childhood Experiences

    On Feb 1, 6:30 PM, NAMI High Country welcomes Hayley Bayne to present “Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences & Resilience.” Hayley represents the WCCI, first of several Trauma & Recovery.
    Trauma can occur at any stage of life to any one of us. Its effects are far more prevalent in society and in High Country communities that most realize. Childhood trauma has long-lasting effects on the brain and the rest of the body. This presentation with inform about toxic stress and ways we can promote resilience in our daily lives. This program is for everyone, because even those who have not experienced trauma have people in their lives who have.

  • Watauga County Republican Women's Club

    The Watauga County Republican Women’s Club (WCRWC) will have its last meeting of 2020 on Wednesday, October  28th at the Watauga County Republican Headquarters in Boone, NC. The meeting will begin at noon. All interested in furthering the Republican cause in The High Country are welcome to attend and are invited to join. Call 828-832-6864 for more information.   • NAMI Family Support Group

    NAMI Family Support Groups are free, confidential, and safe groups of families helping other families who live with mental health challenges. In NAMI Family Support Groups, families join a caring group of individuals helping one another by their collective lived experiences and learned wisdom. Family members can achieve a renewed sense of hope for their loved one living with mental health challenges.

  • NAMI Family Support Groups Now Available Online

    Effectively immediately, NAMI High Country is offering NAMI Family Support Groups via online video conferencing at the same date and time as in-person groups, which have been suspended during the COVID-19 emergency: 2nd Monday of each month, 7:00 to 8:30 PM & 4th Sunday of each month, 3:00 to 4:30 PM. If someone in your life experiences symptoms of mental health conditions, these groups can help you understand what they are experiencing and how to help them while practicing self-care. For information on how to join, send your inquiry to Mike Tanner at Participants are welcome to attend either or both groups. Like all NAMI programs, this group is free to participants.

  • “Intersections of Law & Mental Health in the High Country”

    The biology department greenhouse staff invites you to a class on growing succulent plants in your home or office windowsill.
    We will talk about three dozen easy care, proven species from our succulent collection of nearly 400 species. There will be live plants from Mexico, South Africa,
    and Madagascar, as well as other countries, so this might be a good geography lesson. We will even peek at an Aloe from Zanzibar!

  • Dodgeball for a good cause!

    Ready to beat the winter blues with some healthy competition? Look no further than Dodgeball for Hope, a tournament benefiting Hope Pregnancy Center! This year features a major, kids, and women's league, and all tournament play will take place at Watauga High School Main Gym.

    Cost to play is $100 for a team of 5. This includes at least two games of play and t-shirt for each player. Spectators are always free.

    Concessions are available for purchase thanks to our generous friends at Chick-Fil-A, Stick Boy Bread, Mast General Store, to name a few.

  • Relay for Life Pinto Bean Fundraiser Dinner at Grace Lutheran Church Wednesday May 15th 5pm-7pm

    All are invited and welcome to come to the annual Pinto Bean Dinner in the fellowship hall of Grace Lutheran Church to support the Grace Relay for Life team. For a donation in any amount, all the food and fixings including slaw, cornbread, drinks, deserts, and of course a variety of pots of pinto bean styles are served cafeteria style. Join us at Grace (across from Dan'l Boone Inn) and do your part for Relay for Life.

  • ENSEMBLE STAGE presents "Frankenstein"

    Fright time is almost here! We're paying homage to the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley's, "Frankenstein," by performing a live staged radio play of the story. This adaptation is based on the novel, NOT the movies, so you won't see Igor, but you will feel the hair on the back of your neck prickle as the creature speaks his first words and seeks revenge on his creator.

  • 3rd Annual Community Fall Dance

    Join us Saturday, October 6th for an exciting evening of delicious food, amazing music, and plenty of dancing. You are cordially invited to the 3rd Annual Community Fall Dance in the Plemmons Student Union Grandfather Mountain Ballroom with live music by the Lucky Strikes. Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. with dancing from 7:00-10:00 p.m. Your ticket includes dinner, dessert, and your choice of two alcoholic beverages (beer or wine (21 and up) for only $25/guest or a special discount of $10/guest for App State students.   • Pinto Bean Supper May 5, 2018, 5-7 p.m., at Bethelview United Methodist Church

    A Pinto Bean Supper will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bethelview United Methodist Church, located on Ridge Road, just off Castle Ford Road in Boone. The menu includes pinto beans, cornbread, slaw, variety of potatoes, variety of desserts and variety of beverages. Take-outs will be available. Donations for the supper will be accepted. Through selfless donations of goods, time, and effort, the High Country can share the HOPE in our hearts "from the mountains to the sea".
